Running gear, axles, steering - Edition 05.2021
Note
The maximum adjustment range is 90° to the left or right of
centre.
– Renew and tighten nut -5-. Counterhold at eccentric bolt -2-
while doing this.
– Check toe value again after tightening nut -5- ⇒ Rep. gr. 44;
Specifications for wheel alignment.

Adjusting front axle toe
– Loosen nut -2- by counterholding hexagon -arrow A- on
track rod -1-.
– Loosen track rod at track rod ball joint. Use suitable tool on
hexagon -arrow A- and -arrow B- to do this.
– Adjust toe setting at left and right wheel by turning hexagon
flats -arrow A-. When doing this, counterhold on hexagon
flats -arrow B-.
NOTICE
Damage to boots from twisting.
– Make sure that the boot on the steering rack is not dam‐
aged or twisted. Twisted boots wear out quickly.
– Do not tighten the lock nut for threaded piece until the
vehicle is standing on the ground. Track rod ball joint must
be parallel to the suspension strut steering lever.
– Tighten lock nut -2-, and check toe setting again.

Checking maximum steering wheel an‐
gle
The maximum steering wheel angle is determined with the aid
of the wheel alignment computer.
– If the values for the maximum steering wheel angle lie out‐
side the tolerances, then check following:
♦ Are steering or suspension components damaged or de‐
formed?
♦ Are track rods visually OK?

♦ Is the symmetry of the track rods OK?
Replace damaged components.
– If the steering wheel is found to be off centre, check the
following:
♦ Check steering components for damage and deformation.
Replace damaged parts.
♦ Check components of suspension for damage and deforma‐
tion. Replace damaged parts.
♦ Check symmetry of track rods as well.
– Measure dimension -a- on both track rod ball joints. Set
track rod ball joints to same dimension.
Dimension -a- must be the same on left side and right side track
rod ball joint.
Maximum permissible difference between left and right is
< 2.5 mm.
– When returning steering to central position, “swivel” steering
wheel with even movements.

Test preparations
Proper toe setting is not possible without wheel runout compen‐
sation!
Any existing lateral runout of the wheels must be compensated
for, otherwise the result will be falsified.
The specified toe-in tolerance may already be exceeded by the
permitted amount of axial runout at the wheel rims. In such
cases it is not possible to set the toe-in correctly without first
compensating for the wheel runout.
Observe the instructions from the manufacturer of the wheel
alignment equipment.
