VW ID.4 Running Gear, Axles, Steering ➜ 5.3 Checking swivel joint

Running gear, axles, steering - Edition 05.2021  
– Unscrew bolt -5-.  
– Pull suspension link -1- out of subframe -3-.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
Vehicles with front left vehicle level sender -G78-/front right  
vehicle level sender -G289-  
– Carry out basic setting using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.  
All vehicles (continued)  
Tightening torques  
♦ ⇒ Rep. gr. 40; Assembly overview – suspension link, swivel  
joint  
♦ ⇒ Rep. gr. 43; Assembly overview – front vehicle level send‐  
ers  
♦ ⇒ Wheels and Tyres Guide; Rep. gr. 44; Wheels, tyres;  
Specified torque for wheel bolts  
5.3  
Checking swivel joint  
Checking axial play  
– Firmly pull suspension link down in -direction of arrow- and  
press up again.

Rep. gr.40 - Front suspension

– Press lower part of wheel forcefully inwards and outwards in  
-direction of arrow-.  
Note  
There should be no “play” during either test.  
Note  
Observe swivel joint while performing tests.  
Note  
Take into account possible existing wheel bearing play or “play”  
in upper suspension strut mounting.  
Note  
Check rubber boot for damage and renew swivel joint, if neces‐  
sary.

Removing and installing swivel joint  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ ball joint puller -3287A-  
The front left vehicle level sender -G78- and front right vehicle  
level sender -G289- will henceforth be referred to as “front vehi‐  
cle level sender”.  
Removal and installation are described for the left side of vehi‐  
cle as an example.  
Tools and auxiliary equipment required:  
♦ Torx T40, commercially available  
Removing  
Vehicles with all-wheel drive:  
– Loosen threaded connection of drive shaft ⇒ Rep. gr. 40;  
Loosening and tightening threaded connections of drive  
shaft.  
All vehicles (continued)  
– ⇒ Rep. gr. 44; Removing wheel  
– Remove stone deflector for suspension link ⇒ Rep. gr. 40;  
Removing and installing stone deflector for suspension link.  
Vehicles with front vehicle level sender  
– Unbolt front left vehicle level sender from suspension link  
⇒ Rep. gr. 43; Removing and installing front vehicle level  
sender [G78]/[G289].
