Removing and installing boot  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1275 A-  
♦ pinch-on clamp tool for steering rack -VAS 6199A-  
Removal and installation are described for the left side of vehi‐  
cle as an example.  
Removing  
NOTICE  
Risk of damage due to defective boot. Ingress of moisture and  
soiling into steering rack possible. There must be a palpable  
film of grease in the area of the teeth on the steering rack. If  
there is no film of grease, the steering rack must be renewed.  
– Renew the steering rack if it shows one of the following  
signs:  
– Corrosion.  
– Damage.  
– Wear.  
– Soiling.  
– ⇒ Rep. gr. 44; Remove wheel.  
– Remove track rod ball joint ⇒ Rep. gr. 48; Removing and  
installing track rod ball joint.  
– Clean outside of steering rack in vicinity of boot.  
– Clean track rod.  
– Open clamp -3- of boot -2- on steering rack -1- on inside.  
– Open clip -2- of boot -3- on track rod -1-.

– Pull off boot.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
NOTICE  
Check the steering rack for signs of wear.  
– The steering rack must be renewed if it shows signs of  
corrosion, damage, wear or soiling.  
– If there is no film of grease on the steering rack, the steer‐  
ing rack must be renewed.  
– Steering rack must not be greased.  
– Push new clip, new clamp and boot onto track rod.  
– Slightly grease sealing surface between boot and track rod.  
Refer to Electronic parts catalogue (ETKA) for allocation.  
– Push bellows -2- onto track rod -1-.  
– Secure new clip on boot using hose clip pliers -  
V.A.G 1275 A-.  
– Push rubber boot onto steering rack housing to stop.

– Secure new clamp -1- on boot using pinch-on clamp tool for  
steering rack -VAS 6199A-.  
– Tighten clamp so that its ear -arrow- is positioned as shown  
in illustration.  
– Carry out wheel alignment ⇒ Rep. gr. 44; Wheel alignment.  
Tightening torques

♦ ⇒ Wheels and Tyres Guide; Rep. gr. 44; Wheels, tyres;  
Specified torque for wheel bolts

Removing and installing track rod  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ open-end spanner insert -V.A.G 1923-  
♦ pinch-on clamp tool for steering rack -VAS 6199A-  
Removing  
Removal and installation are described for the left side of vehi‐  
cle as an example.  
– ⇒ Rep. gr. 44; Remove wheel.  
– Clean steering rack and track rod on outer side in area of  
boot.  
– Remove track rod ball joint ⇒ Rep. gr. 48; Removing and  
installing track rod ball joint.  
– Open clamp -3- of boot -2- on steering rack -1- on inside.  
– Turn steering as follows:  
Important  
For left track rod, turn steering to full right lock.
