Removing and installing spring
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Extension -T10001/8-
♦ Open end spanner insert -V.A.G 1332/7-
♦ Ratchet insert -T10001/11-

Removing
– Remove suspension strut ⇒ Rep. gr. 40; Removing and in‐
stalling suspension strut.
– Clamp suspension strut support clamp -V.A.G 1752/20--5- in
a vice -6-.
– Clamp suspension strut -3- into suspension strut support
clamp -V.A.G 1752/20--5-.
– Install spring retainers -V.A.G 1752/4--2- to spring tensioner
-V.A.G 1752/1--1-.
– Fit spring tensioner -V.A.G 1752/1--1- with spring retainers
-V.A.G 1752/4--2- to spring -4-.

6 - Vice
– Make sure that spring -2- is properly seated in spring retain‐
ers -V.A.G 1752/4--4- -arrow-.
CAUTION
Risk of injury from insufficient spring preload.
Components are under tension and can thus injure people
when the bolted connections are loosened.
– Make sure that spring is seated correctly in spring retainer.
– Pretension spring until suspension strut mounting is re‐
lieved of tension.
– Use spring tensioner -V.A.G 1752/1--11- to preload spring
-8- until deep groove ball thrust bearing -6- is accessible.
– Fit tools as shown in illustration.

– Loosen threaded connection. When doing this, counterhold
piston rod using tools as shown.
– Unscrew nut.
– Remove suspension strut mounting -5- and deep groove ball
thrust bearing -6-.
– Remove spring -8-.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
Installation position of attachments
– Insert plate -2- in suspension strut mounting -1- so that plate
is located beneath hooks of suspension strut mounting.
– Make sure that guide lug -arrow- fits in recess of plate -2-.
– Press stop buffer -1- into suspension strut mounting -2-.
– Ensure that stop buffer -1- comes fully into contact on sus‐
pension strut mounting -2- -arrow-.
– Insert protective sleeve -1- in deep groove ball thrust bearing
-2-.

– Make sure that protective sleeve -1- engages correctly
-arrows-, as shown in illustration.
All vehicles (continued)
– Insert spring seat -3- into shock absorber -2-.
– Fit spring -1- with spring tensioner -V.A.G 1752/1- onto
spring seat -3- at bottom.
– End of spring coil -arrow B- must be in contact with limit stop
-arrow A-.
NOTICE
Noise can ensue if the suspension strut mounting is not as‐
sembled correctly in relation to the deep groove ball thrust
bearing.
– Observe installation position of suspension strut mounting
in relation to deep groove ball thrust bearing when assem‐
bling.
– Fit deep groove ball thrust bearing -2- on spring -3-.

– Align suspension strut mounting -1- with deep groove ball
thrust bearing -2-.
Important
•
Lug of suspension strut mounting -1- must be located in
recess -arrow A- of deep groove ball thrust bearing -2-.
•
Edge of suspension strut mounting -1- must be folded over
collar of deep groove ball thrust bearing -2- all around.
– Make sure that disc -4- is correctly seated.
– Tighten nut -4- on piston rod -6-. When doing this, counter‐
hold piston rod using tools as shown.

– Relieve tension on spring tensioner -V.A.G 1752/1-, and re‐
move it from spring.
– Remove suspension strut from suspension strut support
clamp -V.A.G 1752/20-.
– Install suspension strut ⇒ Rep. gr. 40; Removing and instal‐
ling suspension strut.
