Checking cooling system for leaks
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ adapter - VAS 691 005/5-
♦ adapter for cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274/9-
♦ cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274B-
64 .
– Check cooling system for leaks ⇒ page 65 .
– Check pressure relief valve in filler cap ⇒ page 66 .
Checking cooling system tester - V.A.G 1274B- for leaks
Important
•
To ensure that the leak test is carried out correctly, a self-
test must first be performed on the cooling system tester
-V.A.G 1274B-.
– Operate hand pump of cooling system tester several times
and build up a pressure of 3.0 bar.
– Observe pressure on pressure gauge of cooling system test‐
er for 30 seconds.

Electric rear-wheel drive EIP220 and all-wheel drive EIA200, EIP220 - Edition 11.2021
If no pressure is built up or if pressure dissipates, cooling sys‐
tem tester must not be used.
Checking cooling system for leaks
CAUTION
The cooling system may be under pressure. Risk of scalding
due to hot steam and hot coolant
Danger of scalding skin and other parts of the body
– Put on protective gloves.
– Put on safety goggles.
– Cover filler cap on expansion tank with a suitable cloth and
open carefully to release pressure.
– Open filler cap -arrow- on coolant expansion tank.
– Screw adapter - VAS 691 005/5- -1- onto coolant expansion
tank -2-.
– Connect cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274B- -3- to adapter
-1-.
– Operate hand pump of cooling system tester several times
and build up a pressure of 1.5 bar.
Important
•
The pressure should not drop by more than 0.2 bar within 10
minutes.
– If the pressure drops more than 0.2 bar, locate leak and
eliminate fault.
Note
The pressure loss of 0.2 bar within 10 minutes is caused by
the decrease in coolant temperature. If the coolant temperature

corresponds to the ambient temperature, no pressure loss is
permissible.
Important
•
If leaks were found and dealt with, leak test must be repea‐
ted.
Checking pressure relief valve in filler cap
Note
The shape of the filler cap for the coolant expansion tank may
vary depending on vehicle equipment/version.
– Screw filler cap -3- onto adapter for cooling system tester
-V.A.G 1274/9- -2-.
– Connect cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274B- -1- to adapter
for cooling system tester -2-.
– Operate hand pump of cooling system tester -1- several
times.
Important
•
Blue filler cap: The pressure relief valve should open at a
pressure of 1.4 ... 1.6 bar.
•
Black filler cap: The pressure relief valve should open at a
pressure of 1.6 ... 1.8 bar.
– Renew filler cap -3- if pressure relief valve does not open as
described.
