VW ID.4 Electric rear-wheel and all-wheel drive ➜ Filling cooling system

ID.4 2021 ➤, ID.3 2020 ➤
Electric rear-wheel drive EIP220 and all-wheel drive EIA200, EIP220 - Edition 11.2021
– Connect electric vacuum pump -VAS 6096/2- -D-. To do this,
fit hose -E- onto plug-in connector -B- on cooling system
charging device -C-.
– Connect electric vacuum pump -D- to battery -A-, and switch
it on.
– Open shut-off tap -B-.
NOTICE
Risk of damage to electric vacuum pump from coolant being
drawn in.
– Make sure that the electric vacuum pump does not draw
in coolant. Drain coolant from the coolant expansion tank
beforehand.
– If the water separator -1- in the electric vacuum pump is fil‐
led with coolant during the following procedure, drain coolant
from the coolant expansion tank ⇒ page 73 .
– Using the electric vacuum pump, generate vacuum until nee‐
dle of pressure gauge -arrow- is significantly below green
area.

– Close shut-off tap -B-, and switch off electric vacuum pump
-D-.
– Observe pressure gauge for one minute. Needle of pressure
gauge -arrow- must not move.
Once vacuum is reached and system is leak-tight, cooling sys‐
tem can be filled.
– “Slowly” open shut-off tap -A- to prevent coolant from foam‐
ing.

Electric rear-wheel drive EIP220 and all-wheel drive EIA200, EIP220 - Edition 11.2021
Note
The vacuum in the cooling system causes the coolant to be
drawn out of the coolant reservoir -F- and the cooling system to
be filled with coolant.
– Close shut-off tap -A- after filling.
– Remove electric vacuum pump and cooling system charge
unit -C- from coolant expansion tank.
– Coolant level in coolant expansion tank must be 10 mm
above max. - marking -1-.
– Connect cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274 B- -3- to coolant
expansion tank -2- using adapter -1-.

– Build up pressure of 1.0 bar using hand pump of cooling
system -3- tester.
– Carry out function “Bleed cooling system” using ⇒ Vehicle
diagnostic tester ⇒ Rep. gr. 00; Access to diagnoses.
Important
Carry out this function 2 times in succession.
– Release pressure at hand pump of cooling system tester -3-.
– Detach adapter -1- from coolant expansion tank.
– Fill or extract coolant as necessary.
Important
Coolant level must be 5 mm above max. marking -1-.
Note
This excess amount of coolant is necessary since the coolant
level may decrease automatically due to vehicle operation.
– ⇒ Rep. gr. 19; Checking filling quality.
The filling process is completed.
Draining coolant expansion tank
This work step is only necessary if the water separator in the
electric vacuum pump is filled with coolant during the filling
process.
– Close shut-off tap -B-, and switch off electric vacuum pump
-D-.

– Detach hose -E- from cooling system charge unit -C-.
– Seal supply hose -2- and return hose -1- of coolant expan‐
sion tank with hose clamps, up to 25 mm -3094- -H-.
– Open shut-off tap -B- on cooling system charge unit -C- to
vent coolant expansion tank.
– Detach cooling system charge unit -C-.
– Detach adapter -I- from coolant expansion tank.
– Extract coolant from coolant expansion tank.
– Reattach adapter -I- and cooling system charge unit -C-.
– Connect electric vacuum pump -D-. To do this, fit hose -E-
onto plug-in connector -B- on cooling system charge unit
-C-.

CAUTION
The cooling system may be under pressure. Risk of scalding
due to hot steam and hot coolant
Danger of scalding skin and other parts of the body
– Put on protective gloves.
– Put on safety goggles.
– Cover filler cap on expansion tank with a suitable cloth and
open carefully to release pressure.
– Open filler cap on coolant expansion tank -arrow- briefly to
release pressure in cooling system and then tighten cap
again.
