Gear oil
4.1
Checking gear oil level
CAUTION
Risk of injury from escaping oil.
Irritation and injury to eyes and skin possible.
– Wear safety goggles.
– Wear protective gloves.
Important
•
Vehicle must be horizontal when checking gear oil level.
– Remove front underbody cladding ⇒ General body repairs,
exterior; Rep. gr. 66; Underbody cladding; Removing and
installing front underbody cladding.
– Unscrew plug for gear oil filling and inspection hole -arrow-
from three-phase current drive 2 -VX97--1-.
Important
•
The gear oil level is correct when the gearbox is filled to the
lower edge of the oil filler hole.
– Fill gear oil ⇒ Rep. gr. 34; Gear oil; Draining and filling gear
oil.
– Screw in and tighten new plug for gear oil filling and inspec‐
tion hole -arrow-.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ adapter for oil filling -VAS 6291/2-
♦ charging device for all-wheel drive coupling -VAS 6291A-
♦ used oil collection and extraction unit -VAS 6622A-

Draining gear oil
– Remove front underbody cladding ⇒ General body repairs,
exterior; Rep. gr. 66; Underbody cladding; Removing and
installing front underbody cladding.
– Place used oil collection and extraction unit -VAS 6622A-
under gearbox.
– Unscrew gear oil drain plug -arrow- from three-phase current
drive 2 -VX97--1-, and allow gear oil to drain.
– Screw in and tighten new gear oil drain plug -arrow-.
Fill with gear oil
♦ Allocate gear oil according to ⇒ Electronic parts catalogue
(ETKA).
♦ ⇒ Rep. gr. 00; Capacities
– Unscrew plug for gear oil filling and inspection hole -arrow-.
– Screw adapter for oil filling -VAS 6291/2- into gear oil filling
and inspection hole.
– Fit charging device for all-wheel drive coupling -VAS 6291A-
onto adapter for oil filling -VAS 6291/2-.
– Use charging device for all-wheel drive coupling -VAS
6291A- to fill gear oil up to lower edge of oil filler hole.
– Screw in and tighten new plug for gear oil filling and inspec‐
tion hole -arrow-.
