7.1
Calibrating front camera for driver as‐
sist systems [R242]
7.1.1
Calibration conditions
The camera must be calibrated, after the following work has
been performed on the vehicle:
•

•
Changes to wheel alignment on rear axle.
Ride height adjustment on one axle by more than 5 mm.
Ride height adjustment on both axles by more than 10 mm.
Removal and installation or renewal of camera.
Removal and installation of windscreen.
Repair work on components in which the camera is installed,
or components which affect the installation position of the
camera.
•
Event memory shows no or incorrect basic setting/adapta‐
tion.
The following situations can cause the camera function to be
impaired by sustained poor visibility of the lane marker lines:
♦ Contamination or icing in the camera's field of view.
♦ Field of view of the camera is fogged.
•
The camera’s field of view must be cleaned manually if
there is heavy soiling on the inside of the windscreen in
the camera's field of view. To do this, the camera and back‐
light masking screen must be removed and the windscreen
cleaned using cleaning solution ⇒ Electronic parts catalogue
(ETKA).

Calibrating front camera for driver as‐
sist systems [R242], dynamic
Preparation
– Read and clear event memory using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic
tester.
Calibrating
•
⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester connected.
– Select “My test plan”.
– Press following function buttons:
♦ Diagnosis-compatible systems
♦ 00A5 – Front camera for driver assist systems
♦ 00A5 – Front camera for driver assist systems, functions
♦ 00A5 – Calibration
– Follow instructions on ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.

Calibrating front camera for driver as‐
sist systems [R242], static
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ ACC reflector mirror -VAS 6430/10-
♦ adjustment device -VAS 6430-
♦ calibration board -VAS 6430/4-
♦ setting device -VAS 6430-
Preparation
– Observe calibration conditions ⇒ f4.1 or calibration and sur‐
rounding conditions”, page 19 .
– Observe test prerequisites for wheel alignment ⇒ Running
gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr. 44; Wheel alignment; Test
prerequisites.
– Observe preparative measures for wheel alignment with
driver assist systems ⇒ Running gear, axles, steering; Rep.
gr. 44; Wheel alignment; Preparative measures.
– Check camera, holder and fasteners for damage, manipula‐
tion and secure fit.
– Read and clear event memory using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic
tester.
– Verify whether there is sufficient space between vehicle and
setting device -VAS 6430-, before driving vehicle onto wheel
alignment platform.
•
Distance between setting device -VAS 6430- and hub centre
points of front wheels must be 1500 mm ±25 mm.
Note
If there is not enough space, move vehicle backwards onto
wheel alignment platform as required to make space.
– Drive vehicle straight onto wheel alignment platform.
– Move wheels to straight-ahead position.
– Install quick-release clamps to front wheels.
– Install reflectors to quick-release clamps.
– Connect ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester, select programme, and
follow instructions.
– Measure ride height -a- at all 4 wheels and note data.
•
The setting device -VAS 6430- must not be moved on align‐
ment beam.

•
Wheel alignment platform must be in the lowermost levelled
position for next work step.
– Turn up adjustment device -VAS 6430- until alignment beam
is parallel to centre of wheel alignment sensors on front
wheels.
– Position setting device -VAS 6430- at distance -a- from
wheel hub centre of front wheels to beam of setting device
-VAS 6430-.
•
Distance -a- = 1500 mm ±25 mm
– Use distance measuring unit -1- to measure distance -a- on
both sides of vehicle, and align setting device -VAS 6430-.
•
Distance -a- must be same on both sides of vehicle.
– Fit wheel alignment sensor -1- to setting device -VAS 6430-,
and tighten it.
•
Wheel alignment platform must be in the lowermost levelled
position for next work step.
– Measure height value -a- between standing surface of set‐
ting device -VAS 6430- and wheel support surface on wheel
alignment platform.

Non-SUV models:
Height of calibration board -VAS 6430/4-: 1200 mm + height
value -a-.
SUV models:
Height of calibration board -VAS 6430/4-: 1400 mm + height
value -a-.
All vehicles (continued)
– Enter value in wheel alignment computer.
– Loosen clamping bolt -arrow-, and place level staff -1- on
floor.
– Use crank -1- to set calibration board -VAS 6430/4- to speci‐
fied height -2- indicated by wheel alignment computer, and
make a note.

– When specified height has been reached, move level staff
-1- upwards slightly, and secure it with clamping bolt -arrow-.
– Move setting device -VAS 6430- in direction of -arrow B-, un‐
til display on wheel alignment computer is within tolerance.
Make sure that neither the calibration board -VAS 6430/4-
nor the alignment beam are displaced.

– Tighten adjuster screws -2- and -3- slightly, and secure set‐
ting device -VAS 6430- against rolling away.
– Turn adjuster screw -1- until display on wheel alignment
computer is within tolerance.
– Turn adjuster screws -1-, -2- and -3- until spirit levels -A- and
-B- on ACC reflector mirror -VAS 6430/10--5- are horizontal.

– Loosen clamping bolt -arrow-, and place level staff -1- on
floor.
– Verify specified height -2-.
•
If specified height deviates, correct it using crank -1-.
– When specified height has been reached, move level staff
-1- upwards slightly, and secure it with clamping bolt -arrow-.
