Removing and installing bumper cover
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ setting gauge -3371-
Removal and installation are described for the left side of vehi‐
cle as an example.
When renewing vehicle parts, the identification plates from old
parts, which have a replacement part number in the Electronic
parts catalogue (ETKA) must be attached to the new part due to
registration regulations.
Renew any illegible or damaged identification labels and infor‐
mation or warning signs found on components of this vehicle,
and affix the new ones in the same location. For allocation, refer
to Electronic parts catalogue (ETKA).
Removing
– Release front wheel arch cover in area of bumper cover

– Release front wheel housing liner in area of bumper cover

– Unscrew bolts -1-.
– Unscrew bolts -1-.
The aid of an additional mechanic is required for the subse‐
quent work steps.
– Unclip bumper cover -2- in direction of -arrow A-, and hold it
there.
– Pull off bumper cover -2- in direction of -arrow B-.
– Disconnect electrical connector.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Verify gaps using setting gauge -3371-. Observe ⇒ Body
Repairs; Rep. gr. 00; Panel gaps; Body – front, when doing
this.
Vehicles with adaptive cruise control

– Remove front bumper cover ⇒ Rep. gr. 63; Removing and
installing bumper cover.
– Remove headlight ⇒ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 94; Head‐
light; Removing and installing headlight.
– Remove lock carrier ⇒ Rep. gr. 50; Removing and installing
lock carrier.
– Unscrew only one bolt -2- each on left and right longitudinal
member.
– Instead of the bolts screw guide pins -T10093--4- into longi‐
tudinal member on left and right.
– Unscrew remaining 6 bolts -2- from left and right longitudinal
member.
– Only unscrew one bolt -6- each on left and right of subframe.
– Instead of the bolts screw in guide pins -T10228--5- on left
and right of subframe.
– Unscrew remaining 2 bolts -6- on left and right of subframe.
– Pull bumper carrier with attachments -1- towards front on
guide pins.
Take care of electrical wires when doing this. Disconnect elec‐
trical connectors if necessary.
– Fix bumper carrier in position by screwing in adapter -
T10467--3- on left and right between bumper carrier and
longitudinal member.
– Fix bumper carrier in position by screwing in adapter -
T10480--7- on left and right between bumper carrier and
subframe.

Removing
– Remove front bumper cover ⇒ Rep. gr. 63; Removing and
installing bumper cover.
– Remove headlight ⇒ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 94; Head‐
light; Removing and installing headlight.
– Remove lock carrier ⇒ Rep. gr. 50; Removing and installing
lock carrier.
– Loosen radiator module, and lift it out of radiator mount‐
ings ⇒ Electric rear-wheel drive EIP220 and all-wheel drive
EIA200, EIP220; Rep. gr. 19; Radiator, radiator fan; Remov‐
ing and installing radiator module.
– Secure radiator module to prevent it falling down.
– Detach washer fluid reservoir, and tie it up on the side
⇒ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 92; Windscreen washer sys‐
tem; Removing and installing washer fluid reservoir.
– Unscrew inner bolts -6- from longitudinal member on left and
right.
– Instead of the bolts screw short guide pins -T10625--4- into
longitudinal member on left and right.
– Unscrew outer bolts -6- on left and right of subframe.
– Instead of the bolts screw in long guide pins -T10625--3- on
left and right of subframe.
– Secure split pin -5-.
– Unscrew bolts -2- from longitudinal member on left and right.
– Pull bumper carrier with attachments -1- on guide pins in
direction of -arrow-.
Take care of electrical wires when doing this. Disconnect elec‐
trical connectors if necessary.
– Detach electrical wires from bumper carrier.

– Pull out split pin -5-.
– Pull bumper carrier -1- off guide pin -T10625-.
Installing
– With the aid of a second mechanic, push bumper carrier -1-
in direction of -arrow- onto guide pins -T10625-.
– Secure split pin -5- on left and right.
– Screw in bolts -2- firmly, but do not tighten them.
– Unscrew long guide pins -T10625--3- on left and right of
subframe.
– Screw outer bolts -6- firmly into subframe, but do not tighten
them.
– Unscrew short guide pins -T10625--4- from longitudinal
member on left and right.
– Screw inner bolts -6- firmly into longitudinal member on left
and right, but do not tighten them.
Continue installation in reverse order of removal, observing the
following:
– Tighten bolts -2- and -6-.

The radar sensor cover has been modified.
Function may be affected.
– Do not repair, paint or cover the radar sensor cover with
film.
– Do not cover the radar sensor with other components.
Removing
The radar sensor cover cannot be removed without being dam‐
aged.
Vehicles with front light conductor for contour lighting in radiator
grille
– Remove light conductor for contour lighting in radiator grille,
front right -L362- and light conductor for contour lighting
in radiator grille, front left -L363- ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

Vehicles without front light conductor for contour lighting in radi‐
ator grille

NOTICE
Risk of damage to the bumper cover due to material removal.
– Mask off bumper cover above the radar sensor over with
commercially available adhesive tape.
– Maintain a cutting depth of 4 mm.
– Use electric cutter -V.A.G 1561B- and 80 mm saw blade
-V.A.G 1561/26--3- to cut radar sensor cover -1- along cut
line -2- on left and right of front badge.
– Release catches -arrows-.

– Remove lower part of radar sensor cover -1-.
– Fit commercially available screwdriver -2- in direction of
-arrow A- to radar sensor cover -1-.
– Turn commercially available screwdriver -2- 60° in direction
of -arrow B-, and lift tab -3- of radar sensor cover -1- over
clip -4-.
– Use commercially available pliers to pull remaining parts of
radar sensor cover -1- in direction of -arrow C- out of bump‐
er cover -5-.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Push radar sensor cover onto bumper cover until radar sen‐
sor cover can be heard to engage.

Before the bumper cover is repaired, it must be determined
whether repair is possible or whether the bumper cover must be
renewed.

Installing
The bracket for park assist steering sender will henceforth be
referred to as “bracket”.
The installation is described for one of the brackets as an exam‐
ple.
The bracket is installed after the bumper cover has been pain‐
ted.
The markings -2- for bracket -1- are located on the inside of the
bumper cover.
– Use a commercially available drill bit -3- to pre-drill hole.

– Fit screw-hole punch, 18.6 mm -VAS 6614/9- with screw
head -1-, washer and counter-support -2- from inside of
bumper cover -3-.
– Screw on punch -4-, staying just clear of bumper cover -3-.
– Press punch -4- against bumper cover -3-.
– Tighten screw head -1-.
NOTICE
Risk of damage to component surfaces due to turning the
screw-hole punch.
– Hold the screw-hole punch firmly.
– Turn screw head -1- to pull punch -4- in direction of -arrow-
through material of bumper cover -3-.
– Remove screw-hole punch, 18.6 mm -VAS 6614/9- from
bumper cover -3-.
– Centre bracket -1- via hole, and use attachment device for
PDC holder -VAS 6614/7--2- to secure bracket in direction of
-arrow- to bumper cover -3-.
– Refer to figure for positions of clip, M-shaped -VAS
6872/3--2- on bracket -1-.

– Secure clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- in direction of
-arrow A- in handset -VAS 6872/1--3-.
NOTICE
Risk of damage to bumper cover due to inaccurate adjust‐
ment of the spacer.
– Observe the exact distance.
If the distance is too low, the bracket -4- will not be secured
properly.
If the distance is too large, the clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2-
will cause visible marks on the bumper cover -1-.
– Set distance -a- to exactly 3 mm.
– Allow clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- to melt in without ap‐
plying force.
– Switch off hand set -VAS 6872/1--3- when spacer makes
contact with bracket.
– Allow the clip to cool down for 10 s. Do not move handset
-VAS 6872/1--3- during this period.
– After the cool-down period has elapsed, pull off handset
-VAS 6872/1--3-, and repeat procedure for remaining clips,
M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2-.
– After all clips, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- have been instal‐
led, cut off ends of all clips, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2-.
