Removing  
Vehicles with towing bracket  
The towing bracket must be folded in.

– Remove tail light clusters in side panel ⇒ Electrical system;

– Detach rear wheel housing liner in area of bumper cover  
⇒ Rep. gr. 66; Removing and installing rear wheel housing  
liner.  
– Detach rear wheel arch cover in area of bumper cover  
⇒ Rep. gr. 66; Removing and installing wheel arch covers.

– Unscrew bolts -1-.  
– Remove spreader rivets -1-.  
The aid of an additional mechanic is required for the subse‐  
quent work steps.  
– Unclip bumper cover -1- in direction of -arrow A- from guide,  
and hold it there.

– Pull off bumper cover -1- in direction of -arrow B-.  
– Disconnect electrical connectors.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Verify gaps using setting gauge -3371-. Observe ⇒ Body  
Repairs; Rep. gr. 00; Panel gaps; Body – rear, when doing  
this.  
Tightening torques

Installing brackets for park assist steer‐  
ing senders  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3-  
♦ clips, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3-  
♦ hand set -VAS 6872/1-  
♦ handset -VAS 6872/1-  
♦ screw-hole punch, 26.5 mm -VAS 895 003-  
Installing  
The bracket for park assist steering sender will henceforth be  
referred to as “bracket”.  
The installation is described for one of the brackets as an exam‐  
ple.  
The bracket is installed after the bumper cover has been pain‐  
ted.  
The markings -2- for bracket -1- are located on the inside of the  
bumper cover.  
– Use a commercially available drill bit -3- to pre-drill hole.  
– Fit screw-hole punch, 26.5 mm -VAS 895 003- with screw  
head -1-, washer and counter-support -2- from inside of  
bumper cover -3-.  
– Screw on punch -4-, staying just clear of bumper cover -3-.  
– Press punch -4- against bumper cover -3-.  
– Tighten screw head -1-.

NOTICE  
Risk of damage to component surfaces due to turning the  
screw-hole punch.  
– Hold the screw-hole punch firmly.  
– Turn screw head -1- to pull punch -4- in direction of -arrow-  
through material of bumper cover -3-.  
– Remove screw-hole punch, 26.5 mm -VAS 895 003- from  
bumper cover -3-.  
– Attach bracket -1- in direction of -arrow A- in bumper cover  
-2-.  
– Refer to figure for positions of clip, M-shaped -VAS  
6872/3--2- and -3- on bracket -5-.  
– Secure clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- or -3- in direction of  
-arrow A- in handset -VAS 6872/1--4-.  
NOTICE  
Risk of damage to bumper cover due to inaccurate adjust‐  
ment of the spacer.  
– Observe the exact distance.  
If the distance is too low, the bracket -5- will not be secured  
properly.

If the distance is too large, the clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2-  
and -3- will cause visible marks on the bumper cover -1-.  
– For clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- set distance -a- precise‐  
ly to 3 mm.  
– For clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--3- set distance -a- precise‐  
ly to 1.5 mm.  
– Allow clip, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- or -3- to melt in with‐  
out applying force.  
– Switch off hand set -VAS 6872/1--4- when spacer makes  
contact with bracket -5-.  
– Allow the clip to cool down for 10 s. Do not move handset  
-VAS 6872/1--4- during this period.  
– After the cool-down period has elapsed, pull off handset  
-VAS 6872/1--4-, and repeat procedure for remaining clip,  
M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- and -3-.  
– After all clips, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2- and -3- have been  
installed, cut off ends of all clips, M-shaped -VAS 6872/3--2-  
and -3-.

Removing and installing forced ventila‐  
tion vent for passenger compartment  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ removal wedge -3409-  
Note  
The forced ventilation vent will henceforth be referred to as  
“ventilation frame”.  
Removing  
– Remove rear bumper cover ⇒ Rep. gr. 63; Removing and  
installing bumper cover.  
– Use removal wedge -3409- to release locking devices  
-arrows-.  
– Remove ventilation frame -1-.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal.

Checking forced ventilation vent for  
passenger compartment  
Note  
The forced ventilation vent will henceforth be referred to as  
“ventilation frame”.  
The ventilation frames are located in the side panels behind the  
bumper.  
Important  
The ventilation openings must not be covered.  
– Remove rear bumper cover ⇒ Rep. gr. 63; Removing and  
installing bumper cover.  
Note  
The sealing lips in the ventilation frames must be free to move  
and close autonomously.
