Removing and installing steering col‐  
umn electronics control unit [J527]  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Torque screwdriver -V.A.G 1624-  
The steering column electronics control unit -J527- will hence‐  
forth be referred to as “steering column electronics control unit”.  
If the steering column electronics control unit is renewed, per‐  
form the test plan for the renewal of the steering column elec‐  
tronics control unit using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.  
Removing  
– Move steering wheel to rearmost and lowest position. Use  
the full range of the steering column adjustment for this pur‐  
pose.

– Remove lower steering column trim ⇒ General body repairs,  
interior; Rep. gr. 68; Compartments/covers; Removing and  
installing lower steering column trim.  
– Remove control unit with display unit for driver information  
system -J1254- ⇒ Rep. gr. 90; Removing and installing  
control unit with display unit for driver information system  
[J1254].  
NOTICE  
Risk of damage to the electronic components due to electro‐  
static discharge.  
– Discharge any static electricity in your body by briefly  
touching door striker plate.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -2-.  
– Unscrew bolts -3-.  
NOTICE  
Risk of damage to the return ring.  
– When removed, the return ring with slip ring must not be  
turned.  
– Pull off steering column electronics control unit -1-.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Before pushing on steering column electronics control unit  
-3-, ensure the following:  
♦ The “arrows”-4- must align.  
♦ Coil connector -2- must be visible in window -1-.

– If the steering column electronics control unit has been re‐  
newed, conclude the test plan for the renewal of the steering  
column electronics control unit using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic  
tester.
